Synopsis

The Sunbeam Theatre, a cultural cornerstone of Hong Kong's performing arts scene, is embarking on an exciting new chapter in Whampoa following its closure in North Point.

History & Heritage of Sunbeam Theatre

The original Sunbeam Theatre opened in 1972 in North Point, emerging as Hong Kong's premier venue for Cantonese opera. The venue earned its reputation as the 'Grand Palace for Cantonese Opera', hosting countless performances by legendary artists. Its significance was internationally recognised when Time Magazine listed watching traditional Cantonese opera at Sunbeam Theatre as one of Asia's 25 must-experience attractions.

Facilities & Services

The new Sunbeam Whampoa promises to maintain its predecessor's dedication to cultural performances. Like its forerunner, the new establishment aims to provide state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems meeting international standards. The venue is expected to host a diverse programme including:
  • Cantonese opera
  • Stage plays
  • Concerts
  • Movie screening
  • Other cultural events

Expected Date of Opening

The new Sunbeam Whampoa is anticipated to open its doors in mid-June 2025, following the transformation of the former cinema space Golden Harvest in Whampoa. Actual opening date is subject to official announcement.
